1. What is CareLink?

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and the Committee on Faculty Diversity, Inclusion and Development have developed CareLink at Carnegie Mellon University. Based on the Harvard Watch model, CareLink connects members of the CMU community who are looking for help with those looking for work in the areas of child and family care, tutoring and mentoring, and odd jobs.  Carnegie Mellon faculty, staff, and students can create and post jobs, search for providers, and save their favorite providers to their personal profile. Providers (i.e., caregivers, tutors/mentors, and odd-jobbers) can create a personal profile, post a resume, and search for jobs based on a variety of attributes.

2.     Who is eligible to use the CareLink?

CareLink is accessible to CMU students, faculty, staff, and others who have AndrewIDs, for example retirees and contractors with sponsored accounts. In addition, CareLink users may create affiliated job seeker accounts for family members and friends who are legally allowed to work in PA (for example a spouse, neighbor, or child age 15 or over). Affiliated job seekers may post profiles but may not search for or view profiles of other job seekers or search for jobs.

3.     What types of users are there and what can they do?

CareLink allows CMU faculty, staff, and students to:

  • Create a user profile
  • Post a job
  • Send out an urgent job blast
  • Find providers based on school, language, transportation, skills, or other attributes
  • Contact providers
  • Save their favorite providers to their profile
  • Create an affiliated job seeker account for a family member or friend
  • Inactivate or remove their user profile from general viewing
  • View job listings

CareLink allows CMU faculty, staff, and student job seekers to:

  • Create a user profile
  • Create, upload, and update a resume
  • Find a job by location and transportation, skill, and background requirements
  • Respond to a job
  • Receive a daily digest with new jobs
  • Be automatically notified when a provider is needed on short notice

  • Inactivate or remove their profile from general viewing
  • View provider profiles

 CareLink allows affiliated jobseekers to:

  • Create a user profile
  • Create, upload, and update a resume
  • Inactivate or remove their profile from general viewing

4.     How do I find a job?

Prospective providers can search for jobs on the main page of the "Find a Job" tab. All jobs in the system will be displayed there. If you choose to narrow your search by location or job requirements, the main page will update to display jobs that match your search criteria. You can also use the free text search box to search for a job that may contain a specific term (e.g., math, infant, after-school, dog, etc.).

5.     Can I accept a job?

Students, faculty and staff who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents cannot accept a job or perform services for compensation unless they have unrestricted employment authorization under the terms of their visas or other status, or have separately applied for and received a work permit. If you have any questions about whether you can accept a job through CareLink, please contact the Office of International Education at oie@andrew.cmu.edu or 412-268-5231.

6.     How do I find a provider?

Carnegie Mellon faculty, staff, and students posting jobs can search for Providers on the main page of the Post a Job tab. All Providers in the system will be displayed there. If you choose to narrow your search by CMU school or college, languages spoken, transportation, or skills required, then the main page updates to display Providers that match your search criteria. You can also use the free text search box to search for a provider whose resume or profile may contain a specific term (e.g., Spanish, CPR, etc.).

7.     How do I sponsor a family member or friend who would like to post a provider profile?

CMU faculty, staff, and students can sponsor family members and friends to be providers (i.e., caregivers, tutors/mentors, or odd-jobbers) by following these steps:

  1. Click on the “Manage affiliated accounts” link in your account settings. You will see a list of affiliated accounts you have created.
  2. Click on the “Add affiliated account” link.
  3. Enter the name and email address of the person for whom you want to create an affiliated account.
  4. Click “Save.”.

Next to the list of affiliated accounts you have created, you will see an inactivate button which will allow you to remove that person from CareLink.

8.     How can I edit my profile?

You can edit your Basic Profile by clicking on the “Edit Profile” link on the main navigation bar. Providers can additionally edit their resumes by clicking on the “Edit Resume” link. Saved changes are updated immediately.

9.     Have providers on this site been screened?

CareLink does not screen site users other than verifying daily that a user has valid CMU AndrewID or have an afflated account created by someone who has a valid CMU AndrewID.

10.     What if I have a problem with a provider or an employer who I find on CareLink?

CareLink does not get involved in personal disputes arising from connections made through the site. If your dispute is of a legal nature, please contact the appropriate authorities.

11.     How do I remove myself from CareLink?

All users have the option to suspend their account at any time. When you suspend your account, you will no longer receive daily digest emails or be visible to other users on the site. If you are a CMU faculty, staff, or student then your posted jobs will not be visible and if you are a provider then your resume will not be visible. You will, however, be able to log on to the site and reinstate your account at any time.

12.     How can I use CareLink to find a childcare co-op or connect with others who want to share or exchange services?

If you would like to find others to exchange childcare or services with, you need to do the following steps:

  • Update your user profile and check the box "Interested in bartering or co-ops"
  • Create a skills profile and describe the type of work you are interested in exchanging.
  • Go to the Search Profiles page (under Find Help) and conduct a search with the Bartering box checked to find others who are interested in bartering or co-ops. Your profile will come up when others search with the Bartering box checked (but will not come up otherwise).
